Topic:Taiker culture(台客文化) Speaker:Emily

There're New Yorkers in New York; in Taiwan, we have Taikers.

Taiker culture has been a secondary culture in Taiwan. It's difficult to give it a clear definition. But speaking of Taiker, people usually associate some interesting features or behaviors. For example,

1. Taikers like chewing betel nuts and wearing bright-colored shirts.
2. While in public places, Taikers often wear flip-flops, or blue-white slippers.
3. They love name-brand products. Quite a few young Taikers prefer Burberry and LV(Louis Vuitton), and some middle-aged Taikers prefer Gucci and Versace.
4. You could find some stickers on their scooters, like "You can't catch me(捉不到)", and "Only hot girls(限乘辣妹)", which means the backseats only allow young and sexy girls.
5. They speak English with heavy accent. Besides, they enjoy using very common English names, such as Alan(ㄝ冷), David, Michael(賣摳), Jason(接森) , Andy, Apple, Tiffany, Mitchell, Chanel, and Jennifer.

In the past years, the majority of the general public considered Taiker culture as local, crude, low-class, rude, or inferior. I had similar impressions until I read some articles about the changes in Taiwan society and culture.

While more and more alien cultures continue impact Taiwan, many Taiwanese celebrities have started to promote the beauty of Taiwan through their songs or writings. If you often listen to the pop music by Wu-Bai(伍佰)& China Blue, Chen-Jien-Nian(陳建年), Zhu-Tao-Pi(豬頭皮), Chen-Sheng(陳昇), and MC Hotdog, you can realize that these people are trying very hard to create new meanings of Taiker culture.

To be a real Taiker, you have to keep a concept in mind: stretch upward hands and stand your ground. Stretching hands means to touch new things, to learn variety foreign cultures, and try to reach your own limit; in the meanwhile, we should always get footholds in Taiwan, understand our history, aboriginal culture, traditional art, and literature. Most importantly, we should preserve and promote the unique of Taiwanese spirits.

These are the new meanings of Taiker culture. Everyone who lives in Taiwan could be a respectable Taiker, just like Wu-Bai said, “Hey, call me Taiker ! ”
